In 2006, in a move that surprised most of our friends and family, we began a new adventure in our lives. For the first 10 years, we travelled by sailboat up and down the United States east coast, Bahamas, and Florida. When friends our ours wanted to take an RV trip to Alaska, we bought and RV to join them. We have been travelling by RV ever since. This channel contains videos of our travels, family, and projects that we have undertaken along the way.

The main event for our visit to Shenandoah Caverns was, of course, the tour of the caverns. We had an excellent tour guide, Patty, whose love of this special place was apparent and contagious. The tour lasted a little more than an hour. We visited on a weekday morning, and had a small group on our tour.

The Franklin County Truck Convoy near Chambersburg PA is a Make-a-Wish fundraiser for the local chapter that is one of the more unusual events we have attended. There is a huge turnout for the convoy, and both the participants and the onlookers seemed to be having a great time. #Makeawish #FranklinCountyTruckConvoy

We took our last Amtrak trip for this month-long journey from Raleigh to Jacksonville on the Silver Star. This is a pretty short run of only 9 1/2 hours if it runs on time, which it did. We connected with the local bus system to make our way home.

We spent our final weekend in Greensboro NC visiting family. We also managed to include some local history in our wanderings. On Sunday, we caught a ride to Raleigh for some more family time before catching the Silver Star south to Jacksonville.

We boarded an overnight train from New Orleans to Greensboro on the next to last leg of our month-long journey. The Crescent originates in New Orleans and is headed for NYC. We de-trained about halfway through the run in Greensboro NC where we stopped to visit family.

We were back on board and using our USA Rail Pass again to travel from San Antonio to New Orleans on the Sunset Limited, the train that had taken us all the way from LA 2 days before. This time we were in coach for a long (15hr) day trip.

We spent 2 days touring San Antonio's downtown, including the Alamo and Riverwalk. The Comfort Suites Hotel was a short walk from downtown and a short ride from the Amtrak station. We had good weather, once the early morning storms passed, and enjoyed the history, the scenery and some good food.

Thank you for making this video! I'm retiring in Feb and am planning a month of solo train travel from Maine to Florida. My stops will be DC, Charleston, Savannah, Va Beach, West Palm. . .still looking into other areas. Seems like it will take a month of planning, so much to look into. Can't wait!

How expensive is the Amtrak meals
For coach passengers, the costs are: $20 for breakfast. $25 for 2-course lunch. $45 for a 3-course dinner. $20 for all kids meals. The meals are included for sleeper car passengers.

They didn't turn around, just re-positioned the engine.
Where did you board Amtrak, Philly? In the future Amtrak wants to have a new train service from Allentown to NY. Then you won't have to take the bus to the Amtrak.
We boarded at the 30th St Station. A train to Allentown would be great.

Usually once a a year Amtrak has a special on rail pass
Yes. We talk about that a little bit. We've seen it as low as $299, although this year's sale in January was $459.

You are right, and we would have done that, but our plans were not certain when the sale was on this year (and it wasn't as big a sale as it has been in some years). So, we waited until we knew we could make the trip.

I'm not sure, but I think you are asking about our access to the Metro Lounge with our coach ticket. With last year's travel, we had earned Amtrak Select status, which gives access to the lounges.

Can we buy it through online now ? I have been trying to buy the "USA Rail pass" $499 through online many times from yesterday until now. But I failed getting an error message from the homepage. so, I wander where it works or not.
You drove to Raleigh station. What did you do with the car?
We got a ride with a relative, and he just dropped us off and headed back home without parking at the station.

Nice video...thanks for sharing. If the destination is important, fly. If the journey is important, take the train and do not be concerned if you're a few hours late. That is to be expected on Amtrak since they share the rails with freight trains, which have priority.

Isn't that station haunted?
The American Amtrak is not an enjoyable ride and aboard service is averaging average. Compared to other countries traveling trains.
Grew up riding the Crescent from Alexandria, VA, to Atlanta when it was Southern Railway and my Dad worked for Southern in DC and my family is from Atlanta.
My dad rode the Southern Crescent often when I was younger. Mostly from NYC to Greensboro NC. It has a lot of history.

May I ask how did you get a roommate with the RAIL PASS? According to Amtrak, the RAIL PASS is only for the coach seat . I'm hesitated to buy the Rail Pass because it's NOT for rooommate.

Amtrak Guest Rewards members that have enough points to earn Amtrak Select level have access to the lounges. Our travel over the last 15 months allowed us to get Amtrak Select and gave us access to the lounges.
499, was that for the entire trip, no matter how many stopss or per segment
499 was for 10 segments. A segment is counted each time you board and get off a train. For example, NY to Chicago is one segment. Chicago to La Plata was one segment.
How to get from San Francisco City to the station of Emeryville?
You can take an Amtrak bus or a BART bus from San Francisco to the Emeryville station.
Through Connecting AMTRAK Bus. Amtrak Connecting BUS will take you from Emeryville to San Francisco. It's AMTRAK BUS, so called "Throughway Connecting Bus."

The Manitou & Pikes Peak locomotive No. 4 has been on loan to the Grand Canyon Railway since 2020 and hasn't operated since 2016, it might go back to it's home eventually when the time comes. For now it will be displayed there. Also about the Pullman cars, they are not used for excursion use to the Grand Canyon except when one of them are used to take over for 2152 which is the car you rode on, they are now used for the Polar Express event which they are all being repainted in the livery the cars in the book and movie wore.
Thanks for the info. It would be great to see Locomotive No. 4 getting some TLC, like its sibling on display in Manitou Springs. As for the Pullman's, we saw at least some of them already repainted for the Polar Express sitting in the rail yard. Thanks for the background on how they are being used.
